Whether at the front line or at the most senior level, health professionals face particular demands, situations and stressors that can be difficult to share with others.

Experiences of anxiety, depression and burnout can result from such emotionally, physically, intellectually and psychologically demanding work where stress hormones are always ‘on’ at work.

Held in high esteem by the community (something that induces its own set of pressures) health professionals are at an increased risk of depression, anxiety, stress and suicide compared with the general public.

Despite these concerns the health professions continue to stigmatise help seeking because toughness and resilience are often worn as badges of honour.

Horizontal violence

Experience also suggests health professionals are exposed to physical, psychological and other abuses and so-called "horizontal violence" between health professionals can lead to intense, almost pathological competitiveness and in some cases bullying from colleagues.

The pressure to meet internal expectations of perfectionism and family history expectations can be overwhelming and the impact is cumulative.

Workplace triggers

Facing traumatic events at work can trigger complex personal responses, which can be worked through and integrated in a therapeutic relationship.

Other issues confronting health professionals include:

  • Compassion fatigue
  • Drug and alcohol issues
  • Relationship problems
  • Impostor syndrome

Family of origin work

There is some evidence that health and caring professionals come from complex family backgrounds. Work on family-of-origin experiences often features in my work with health professional clients.

My background

As an experienced health professional myself I am aware of the complexity of these rewarding but deeply demanding professions. I know from personal experience that each working day you can be in contact with traumatising experiences and complex staff issues that impact the quality of the job you want to do.

I offer reduced session rates for health professionals and I welcome doctors, nurses and all allied health professionals to contact me to discuss treatment options.

If you want others to be happy, practise compassion. If you want to be happy, practise compassion.
